In 1811 Charles Sherman, built a 4 room wood framed saltbox house on Main Hill. In 1816 an additional four rooms were added by the Shermans to accommodate 11 children and 4 adults.
The Sherman House was reported to be the center of refined culture in Lancaster.
It was the birthplace of both General William Sherman and his brother, Senator John Sherman responsible for the Sherman Anti-trust Act.
Now a museum featuring Sherman family and Civil War memorabilia, the Sherman House is on the Civil War Discovery Trail.
