Built in 1824 for Thomas Ewing, this home was the the first large brick residence in te city. The Adam arched doorway features an elliptical fanlight which matches the window above.

Thomas Ewing was the first graduate of Ohio University. He became a lawyer, orator and Whig politician. He was twice elected to the U.S. Senate, in 1831 and again in 1851. In 1841 he was the Secretary of the Treasury in President Harrison's cabinet. In 1849 he was the first Secretary of the Interior.

After Judge Charles Sherman, father of General William Tecumseh Sherman died, William's mother sent him to live with the Ewings. W.T. evidently married Ellen Ewing, daughter of Thomas Ewing. Sherman planned his march to the sea in this house.
