Gilbert DeVol arrived in Lancaster from Marietta, Ohio in 1829 and started the second foundry here. His foundry was responsible for designing many of the decorative cast iron fences in the area. It stayed in business until 1867. Joel Smith and John Arney were responsible for the remainder of the iron work in Lancaster. Smith arrived in 1826 to establish the first iron foundry. Later Smith and Arney became partners.
